Representation Summary:

Schools can choose to interpret the government guidelines in a way that supports children and staff, rather than works against them. On the whole school environments were happy places, now too often no one has time for each other.

Having been a full-time teacher of 11-18 yr olds for many years and a supply teacher of 3-16 yr olds more recently I can see the deterioration of children's well-being and behaviour and the irascibility of staff. Schools need to claw back time and resources for Sport, Arts and Food Tech/Cooking. These subjects also develop the practical applications of Maths, English, IT and Science in the 'real world'. It's no coincidence that obesity and mental health issues have increased amongst children since these subjects have been sidelined. I had Cooking at school every week and learnt to cook meals, desserts, bread etc. Now children have Food Technology a few months a year, on a carousel with other practical subjects, and much of that is spent on theory with very little actual cooking! Teachers need to be freed up from excessive bureaucracy and appraisal and allowed to be there 100% for the children. Often potentially serious issues a child has can be dealt with by a sensitive teacher who has time to notice such things and who makes the children feel they can talk to their teacher, rather than keep out of their way because 'Miss is too stressed or busy'.
