Policy DS6: Provision of facilities for culture, leisure, tourism and entertainment

Representation ID: 1308

Received: 17/10/2011

Respondent: The Theatres Trust

Representation Summary:

We support the document with regard to Policy DS6 but have not read any other part of the document.

Full text:

The Theatres Trust is The National Advisory Public Body for Theatres. The Theatres Trust Act 1976 states that 'The Theatres Trust exists to promote the better protection of theatres. It currently delivers statutory planning advice on theatre buildings and theatre use through the Town & Country Planning (General Development Procedure) (England) Order 2010 (DMPO), Articles 16 & 17, Schedule 5, para.(w) that requires the Trust to be consulted by local authorities on planning applications which include 'development involving any land on which there is a theatre.'

We support the document with regard to Policy DS6 but have not read any other part of the document.

We suggest the addition of an extra paragraph to Policy DS6 for clarity - 1.c. To protect and enhance existing leisure and cultural facilities throughout the Borough.

Paragraph 165 deals with concerns about the evening economy and we are surprised that the document does not have a policy for this important topic. Evening and night-time activities are a fundamental part of urban renaissance because they ensure the vitality of an area beyond normal working hours.
